The Kidney Stone Treatments You May Need to Know About

Extracorporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy otherwise known as ESWL is the most common form of kidney stone treatments for those that do not pass naturally. The most basic way in which this works is through shock waves that are created outside of the body.

The stones are then broken down into smaller sections which are then easily passed through the body through the urine. This treatment is normally quick and made faster by the help of ultrasounds and X-Rays that can enable the medical professional to pinpoint the exact location of the kidney stones.
Anesthesia is normally used and the recovery time is relatively short. There are a few risks such as minor bleeding, discomfort, blockages from the smaller particles and even the need for more than one set of treatment which can leave the back and abdomen slightly bruised from the shock waves.
Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy is used when the kidney stones are very large or when the use of ESWL is not helpful due to the location of the stones. This is a more surgical procedure which involves a surgeon making a minor incision in the back of the patient and then inserting a funnel through directly to the kidney. The surgeon is then free to take the stone out and when the stone is too large to retrieve in one go, it is first broken down with the help of instruments and energy probes.
Ureteroscopic Stone Removal is again used when ESWL is not suitable and generally this applies when the stones are stuck in the ureter. An ureteroscope, (fiberoptic instrument) is inserted into the ureter by the urethra and the bladder. The stone is then found and removed by one of two methods. Either a device that is shaped like a cage traps the stone and then removes it or shock waves are used to shatter it if it is too big to be removed.
Alongside medical procedures such as these which are used as kidney stone treatments, there are a few more natural methods which can help the passing of the stones. Drinking plenty of fluid can help it on its journey and when combined with pain relief, does not tend to be too painful unless the stone is rather large.
